Teachers & Parents:

Does your kid have a science question?

Have them send us a video with a weather question to weather@9and10news.com!

We all have seen the little toy models of the solar system that you can hold in your hands. All of the planets are different sizes but they all sit very close to one another.

If you are going for something easy to see and explain, it’s a great simple option. But the truth is, those models do not do our beautiful solar system justice for the scale of the planets or the distances between them!

So get ready to have your mind blown because this Doppler 9&10 STEM is going to be a trip, literally.

We are starting with the sun!

In this model, the sun will is about 42″ tall. In real life, from top to bottom the sun is over 865,000 miles long and its surface is almost 10,00 degrees Fahrenheit!

Our first planet in orbit is Mercury.

Here, Mercury is only 5mm tall and 145ft away from the sun. Mercury is actually just over 1500 miles tall and over 36 million miles from the sun.

The small planet is known for its thin atmosphere and extremely hot surface. It can reach over 800 degrees during the day!

Now we travel through space another 30 million miles and we arrive at Venus.

Our Venus is only 13mm tall and just under 300 ft away from our Sun.

Venus is still very close to the sun, so its surface is incredibly hot and windy! Wind speeds at the surface can exceed 450mph, which is about as fast as commercial airlines fly.

Make sure you tune in every Tuesday for a New 9&10 STEM.
