Doppler 9&10 STEM – Waterspout Wonders

9&10 Logo

As we get deeper into the cool season, temperatures at 15,000 feet are much cooler than the Great Lakes. When you get cold air moving over warmer water at different directions you can get localized areas of low pressure often considered surface vorticity. That localized spin can be brought up into a cloud nearby. If the spin gets up to the cloud and is able to condense a funnel is born. Once the funnel has reached the water a waterspout is born! Make sure you send us your photos of waterspouts in your neck of the woods over the next few weeks! We have a cool experiment you can do with the kids that will show you the twist in twister.

What you need:

  • One Mason Jar
  • Lid for your Mason Jar
  • Hand Soap
  • Glitter
  • More Glitter!!
  • Spoon (optional)

How to:

  1. Pour water into mason jar
  2. Pour a few drops of soap in the water
  3. Mix glitter into the water/soap
  4. Put the lid on the jar
  5. Spin the jar at the bottom as much as your heart desires!

If your kiddos try this experiment, send us photos of you and your experiment and you might get to see it during weather on The Four on Tuesdays and Thursdays!

Make sure you tune in every Tuesday and Thursday for a New 9&10 STEM.
