Amazing Northern Michigan Homes: Traverse City’s “The Box”

If you’ve driven down Eighth Street in Traverse City, your eye has probably been caught by a very unique building.

If you have ever wondered what’s in , Whitney Amann and photojournalist Jeremy Erickson take you inside for this week’s Amazing Northern Michigan Homes.

“When the present owners purchased this property, which was built back in 1920 by the way, and originally was a cigar box factory, aptly called ‘The Box’ now, they undertook a large renovation and brought in a lot of local custom tradesmen whose work is evidenced everywhere,” said Shawn Smith, associate broker for Coldwell Banker Schmidt Realtors.

It’s a home, a business space and a rental property all rolled into one and loaded with amazing custom handiwork.

She said, “The gymnasium lights in the kitchen, the cabinetry work throughout the building, especially in the loft space that we’re in right now which is the primary residential space, the steel work that was done to create custom cabinet pulls in the bathrooms, and the bedrooms, and the kitchen, pretty special.”

The master suite is outfitted with some very chic features like the modern, free standing soaking tub and dual vanity.

And “The Loft” isn’t the only luxury living space here.

“And then above the garage, which is recently built, is a high end apartment they call ‘Vitalia’ and that rents out nicely throughout the year,” Smith said. “You feel like you’re right in the middle of downtown Italy when you step into that one. Again high-end, beautiful, very chic and well done.”

Back inside “The Box” are two floors are used to conduct business.

“Above us is a common work place with about 13 offices and a couple conference rooms, bathroom, kitchen; everything you need for a good workspace,” he said. “Again, could be modified to anyone else’s uses. That’s how it is right now.”

A beautiful space in a great location with unlimited potential.

“I would say for anyone that wants to be downtown, have good rental investment property, good income potential, possibly live in here if they would so choose,” Smith said. “This would be something to consider.”
