DNR Reminds of Deadline to Remove Ice Shanties

Nightly temperatures may be in the negatives, but spring is around the corner.

And the DNR is reminding everyone about the deadline to remove ice shanties

The date to remove permanent shanties from the ice for the northern Lower Peninsula is midnight March 15.

Portable shanties are OK, as long as they are not left on the ice overnight.

And that the ice is still thick enough to be on.

“The ice is going to be going out soon and at some point and so we want to make sure that shanties don’t get left on the ice and then when it becomes unsafe to go get them sometimes they sink and become navigational hazards or they float and become navigational hazards,” says Mark Tonella with the DNR.

The deadline for the Upper Peninsula is midnight March 31.
